This 2010, the Olympiad will push through. The regional elimination is scheduled on January 15. There are still regions with no participants, and so they are given the chance to register until January 8. The DepEd and the IYA-NOC are still working on the venues for the event.

Interested applicants can avail of the registration form via the IYA Philippines website

A book review on The Integration of Astronomy in the Rizal Course, by Jose A. Fadul, PhD

Professor Jose A. Fadul of Della Salle University, in line with the observance of the International Year of Astronomy 2009, presents to us the astronomical foundation in which Rizal experienced. He brings us back to the time of Rizal by integrating the subject astronomy into the timeline covered under the Rizal course.

Despite Rizal’s not being an astronomer, Prof. Fadul presents to us the background of Rizal in astronomy; such as the naming of planets and their mythological association with gods from Ateneo, Dr. A. B. Meyer, & T. Pardo de Tavera; his reading of the Historia Universal; and even the mention of items in his novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo which may pertain to the context of astronomy, such as the burning of Copernicus’ work in the Noli. Also, Prof. Fadul describes the account of Rizal with the Great September Comet of 1882 (C/1882 R1). He also mentions the naming of tektites in honor of Rizal - rizalites. In Rizal’s letter to his sister from Madrid, he mentions the sighting of the comet on their way home from Don Pablo’s. It was then believed, by superstitious Filipinos, to have caused cholera. Likewise, Rizal’s visits to some observatories are also mentioned.

The book, The Integration of Astronomy in the Rizal Course, is a creative astronomy text in which Filipino history (specifically Rizal’s history) provides the flow of discussion. It is amazing how Professor Jose Fadul brings up discussions in astronomy from the context of Rizal’s history and works – such as Bluementritt’s inference of Rizal to a comet. The book is very informative, providing basic facts in astronomy while relating it to the Philippine context. Works such as this like Dr. Ambrosio’s Mamahi (ethnoastronomy), are quite interesting since we get to experience astronomy through our heritage and unique experiences as Filipinos. His explanations are supported with clear images, presenting facts from the timeframe of Rizal and supporting it with the current context.

Personally, I would have loved to have had this book incorporated to my history 41 (Rizal) class last semester. A lot of my classmates and some friends who took the Rizal subject are interested in astronomy. As a matter of fact, some of us sat down the beach of Dakak, during our field trip to Dipolog, and observed the unobstructed view of the night sky. Relating the lessons of the course to astronomy would have been very interesting.

This book will certainly come recommended to Filipinos interested in having a background in astronomy.
The invention was made up of two lenses in a tube, the very first refractor telescope. Galileo created a telescope for himself and used it to view the night sky. With this, he was able to make discovery after discovery; a new world as it was deemed. Among his discoveries were craters and mountains on the Moon, four of the largest satellites of Jupiter (Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto), phases of Venus, and the stars of the Milky Way.

Galileo formally released his observations in 1610, in his book The Starry Messenger. His discoveries astounded astronomers everywhere. But since the Church accepted the Ptolemaic system (Ptolemy’s Earth-centered view, rather than Copernicus’ Sun-centered belief), they denied the discoveries of Galileo and had him spend the last years of his life under house arrest.

In the year of Galileo’s death, Isaac Newton was born. He developed a new type of telescope in 1672, the reflector. Aside from that, Newton was able to produce a solid mathematical foundation to the astronomical views of Copernicus and Kepler, alongside his discovery of the laws of gravity.

By the end of the 18th century astronomers were observing the sky with improved telescopes, and have been surveying the sky for celestial objects. One of them is William Herschel who created large telescopes which he used to sweep the sky for objects beyond the solar system. This led to the discovery of Uranus, and many other celestial bodies.

Along came the spectroscope in the 1850s, which was invented by two German physicists, Kirchoff and Bunsen. With the spectroscope, astronomers were able to identify Herschel’s mysterious nebulas. The spectroscope introduced a new science, the marriage of astronomy to physics – astrophysics.

With new scientific discoveries, such as Einstein’s theory of relativity, and the development of larger and more powerful telescopes, such as George Hale’s glass giants, more things are discovered and explored in the night sky. We now have various telescopes designed to look at the various wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. And with the rivalry of superpowers, many discoveries and firsts are made through space exploration.

Much has changed since the time of Galileo. In 400 years time, with the advancement in learning, we now know more than what Galileo knew. With our grasp reaching out into the endless space, now is the best time to venture into astronomy, be it amateur or professional. With the rate of discovery there is always something new for every seeking eye.AstroNormhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17497632392162606438noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-593703194003057187.post-21588939648569497422008-07-08T05:31:00.000-07:002008-09-16T01:37:33.850-07:00International Year of Astronomy 2009<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbmdqRxgwaWiQIrFI-gsqdzZ13lUfk1AoOwSQVcazLbwRmGZOhiMC_IkrRhNEKnNFXpdneA0rEI7g0g5QlTw6A_FYmLhnN0Qg_2wQupaGRICwPIFr_gQlwotEHx1Edw6fcfnFI0RzlecoW/s200/iya_support%5B1%5D.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5246535274757781186" />
Philippines

2009 marks the 400th anniversary of the first astronomical observations with the use of a telescope. This year has been declared by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) as the International Year of Astronomy (IYA). This world wide event is supported by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Affairs Organization (UNESCO).

1st telescope used in astronomy
The telescope was said to be invented by a Dutch lens maker. It was later modified by Galileo Galilei in 1609 and used, for the first time, for astronomical observations. Galileo’s telescope was able to magnify objects up to 30 times. Among the celestial objects he observed was the moon, Venus, Jupiter, and stars with magnitudes unobservable by the naked eye.

IYA Philippines
Each country has a National Committee on Astronomy (NCA) organized by the IAU. The NCA is composed of individual IAU members of the country, and is tasked to coordinate the event from all over the world. Along with the NCA is the Single Point of Contact (SPOC), who is tasked to coordinate with different private and government organizations who wish to participate with IYA. The SPOC will also serve as link between the Philippine Node and the IAU. The NAC in the Philippines organized a National Organizing Committee (NOC) in a meeting held on Feb. 2, 2007 at the Rizal Technological University. The NOC seeks to get the involvement government agencies and institutions, local astronomy organizations, and the science community.
IAU NCA Philippines:
Dr. Bernardo M.
